Politics — Donald Trump Seeks to Regain Control of College Sports

At the White House, a new political debate is stirring the world of American college athletics. President Donald Trump has brought together sports executives, university leaders, and political officials to discuss a major reform of the U.S. college sports system.

For several years now, college athletes have been allowed to earn money through rights to their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). According to President Trump, this change has transformed college athletics into a commercial marketplace that increasingly resembles professional sports.

During a meeting in Washington, he announced plans to sign a presidential executive order aimed at limiting these earnings and restoring the traditional model of amateur college sports.

Some sports administrators argue that the current system threatens the financial balance of universities and distracts student-athletes from their academic goals. Others, however, believe athletes should have the right to benefit from the economic value they generate.

The proposed reform could spark a major legal battle, as several court decisions in recent years have already weakened the authority of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the organization that regulates college athletics in the United States.
